The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, 8 September, the Church joyfully celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — the birthday of Our Lady.
Mary’s birth is not recorded in the Gospels, but from the earliest centuries Christians have celebrated the beginning of her life with great joy. Born to Saints Joachim and Anne, Mary was chosen by God for an extraordinary vocation: to become the Mother of Jesus Christ.
Her birthday points us forward to the mystery of Christ. In Mary’s quiet yes to God, the story of our salvation unfolds, and through her we are continually led towards her Son.
Today is a beautiful opportunity simply to thank God for the gift of Our Lady — for her faithfulness, humility and loving example — and to ask for her prayers for our families, our parish and all those who need her motherly care.
Happy Birthday, Blessed Mother.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
