About Us

St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church is the largest parish church in the Diocese of Plymouth, the seat of our Bishop Mark O’Toole. The first St Mary’s was a church built on the site where the first RNLI office is located on West Quay Road and also honoured St Philomena. The church was founded at the turn of the 20th Century and was served initially by several French priests. This church was built in 1973 and celebrates it’s Golden Jubilee in 2023. We have relationships with St Marys Catholic Primary School and St Edwards RC/CE Comprehensive School as well as having the lead Chaplain post in the local Hospital Trust occupied by Deacon Declan McConville.

St Anthony of Padua is an independent Catholic Church but served from St Mary’s. A smaller but vibrant congregation leads the work in that parish. It was built as Broadstone grew in 1958 and following a surge of faith among the people after the Second World War.

As you will see on the site, we have an Evangelisation Team, multiple community, spiritual and sacramental groups and a thriving community of parishioners who came from 37 nationality groups at the last count!
